How to identify and care for Kanchipuram silk

Kanchipuram silk is prized for its dense weave, rich body and luminous finish. When shopping for one, look closely at the border, pallu and overall texture to understand how the fabric will drape over time.

A well-made saree will feel substantial in hand, with a crisp body and a smooth, even surface. The zari should appear dense and slightly reflective, while the weave should feel balanced rather than overly loose.

For care, dry cleaning is usually the safest choice for ornate pieces. Store each saree folded in a breathable cotton or muslin cover, away from direct sunlight, and avoid spraying perfume or deodorants directly on the fabric.
